2 c dry pinto beans
4 ham hocks
2 bay leaves
1 large onion, chopped
1/2 green pepper, sliced in rounds
1 c (l lb) tomatoes
2 c (8 oz) tomato sauce
1 tbsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
ground cloves

Directions:
Directions:
Soak beans in water to cover overnight, or if time is limited, cover with water, boil briskly 2 minutes, remove from heat and soak only 1 hour. Without draining the beans, add ham hocks, bay leaves and water, if needed to cover the beans again. Simmer about 1 hour or until beans are tender. Add onion, green pepper, tomatoes, tomato sauce, salt, pepper and cloves. Mix until blended and pour into a large 4 quart casserole. Cover and bake at 350º about 1 hour, or until meat is tender. Remove meat from beans; chop meat and return to soup before you serve it.
