3/4 cup shortening or margarine
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses
1 egg
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon cloves
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
sugar for rolling unbaked cookies

Directions:

1. Melt shortening or margarine over low heat or in the microwave, cool.
2. In a large bowl, combine shortening, sugar, molasses and egg.
3. In a separate bowl, sift together all dry ingredients.
4. Combine flour mixture with wet mixture. Mix well.
5. Chill for al least one hour.
6. Form into 1-2 inch balls and roll in granulated sugar.
7. Bake at 375º F for 8 minutes. Watch closely because the bottoms burn easily.

This recipe can be doubled and freezes well. I form it in long rolls and then slice and dip the slices in sugar and bake as normal.
