1 cup of shortening
3 cups of sugar
10 egg whites
4 cups of flour
¾ t cream of tartar
1 cup of buttermilk
3 T boiling water
1 t vanilla
½ t baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar. Add unbeaten egg whites, 2 at a time. Add flour, sifted with cream of tartar, add milk gradually. dissolve soda in boiling water and add to mixture. Add vanilla, pour into greased and floured oblong pan. Bake at 350º until done. (You may add coconut to the batter and use Seven-Minute Frosting, then sprinkle grated coconut over cake frosting.). NOTE: Celestial is Bob Strawn's Great Grand Mother. Alvah's Grandmother. This is the oldest recipe from the Family Tree. This recipe probably dates back to the 1890s.
