1 cup white sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg beaten
1/2 cup sweet milk
3 cups flour
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
1 tsp vanilla

Filling:
1 cup dates (cut up)
1/2 cup cold water
1 tsp flour
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together sugar and shortening.
Add egg and milk.
Sift together flour, cream of tartar, salt and soda.
Add 1 tsp vanilla.
Drop by spoonsful on greased sheet. Put a spoon full of filling on top and
a little more dough on top of filling.

Filling:
Cook until thick--dates, cold water and flour. Cool and add vanilla (1/2 cups optional)

Bake at 375º for 10-12 minutes
