3/4 cup shortening
1/2 tsp soda
1/2 cup chopped dates
1/8 tsp salt
1/3 cup water
1/2 cup white sugar
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup chopped pecans
1 egg
2 cups flour
1 cup shortening

Directions:
Directions:
Combine dates, 1/4 cup sugar and water, then simmer 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add nuts and dash of salt, cool. Sift flour, soda and salt. Cream butter and sugar together thoroughly. Add egg and heat well then add sifted dry ingredients and mix. Chill dough. Roll 1/4 inch thick and spread cold date mixture on dough, roll like jelly rolls and wrap in waxed paper. Chill several hours and slice. Bake in 350 degree oven about 10 minutes.
