7 to 8 yams or sweet potatoes, sized medium to large
1/2 cup butter (can substitute coconut oil)
1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
3/4 cup raw pecans, coarsely chopped
3/4 teaspoon salt, divided (1/2 teaspoon for boiling water and 1/4 teaspoon for topping)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon chili powder

Preheat oven to 350º. Grease a 9" x 13" baking pan. In large pot, cover sweet potatoes or yams with water and add 1/2 teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil, turn heat to low and simmer. Cook until sweet potatoes or yams are fork-tender - do not overcook. Drain and cool until able to be handled. Remove skins and cut into 3/4" slices. Layer slices in baking dish, slightly overlapping, until dish is full. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, melt butter or coconut oil - add brown sugar, salt and cinnamon and whisk until blended. Add chopped nuts and stir to blend. Pour mixture evenly over sweet potato or yam slices. Sprinkle with chili powder. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until hot and bubbly.
