"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup brown sugar, packed
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1-1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2-1/2 cups regular or quick-cooking rolled oats (I prefer regular)
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 large package (12 oz.) semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped nuts (I like pecans, but walnuts are also good)

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º. Lightly grease a cookie sheet and set aside. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in flour, oats, baking soda and salt; mix well. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts. Drop dough by rounded tablespoons onto prepared cookie sheet, spaced about 1-1/2 inches apart. Slightly smash the dough balls down so that they cook a little more quickly. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool completely.
