1/2 c. shortening (Crisco)
1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. boiling water (pour over first 3 ingredients, set aside.)

Add:
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/3 c. flour
c. chopped walnuts

Grease and flour 5x7 loaf pan, pour batter into it and bake at 350º for one hour or until toothpick inserted into center of loaf comes out clean.
