3 cups flour (less 3 Tbsp.)
3 Tbsp. heaping cocoa or carob powder
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 cups plus 1 Tbsp. shortening
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 cup sour milk
1 cup hot water
2 tsp. soda
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour cocoa or carob powder and salt. Mix shortening, sugar, eggs, and milk. Combine with the flour mixture. Mix hot water and soda and stir well. Gradually add this to other mixture. Lastly, add the vanilla. Bake 13x9 inch pan plus 6 cupcakes at 350º.

This was my mom's recipe. I've used it all my married years. I use carob powder instead of cocoa because of allergies and we like it even better. (Great for teenagers - causes no zits!) This makes a big cake.
