Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (or cake flour)
2 cups sugar
1 1/2 tsp. soda
1 1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup shortening
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. allspice
2 eggs
2 cups applesauce
1/2 cup nuts, finely chopped
1 cup raisins

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 350º. Grease and flour 13x9x2 inch pan (or 2 round 8 inch or 9 1/2 inch pans). Measure all ingredients into large mixer bowl. Blend 1/2 minute on low speed, scraping bowl constantly. Beat 3 minutes at high speed, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour into pans. Bake the oblong pan 60 to 65 minutes, layers 50 to 55 minutes, or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool. If desired, frost cake with browned butter frosting.

This is a moist version of an old fashioned favorite: Canned applesauce is the new fashion, plus.
