COOKIE DOUGH:
1 c. sugar
1/4 c. dark corn syrup
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
2 tsp. ground cloves
2 tsp. ground nutmeg
1 c. butter
4 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda

ICING:
2 egg whites
2 c. confectioners' sugar
1/8 tsp. cream of tartar
Red, yellow, green and blue food color

DECORATIONS:
Colored sugar, dragees, multicolored nonpareils, other colored candies

Directions:
Directions:
Day before, bake cookies: In medium saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg with 1/3 c. water. Cook, stirring, over medium heat just until mixture starts to boil.
Add but, stirring until melted. Cool 30 minutes.
Using a wooden spoon, stir in 3 cups flour and baking soda, mixing until smooth.
Add remaining flour. With hands, mix until all flour disappears. Turn dough onto lightly floured board; knead until smooth.
Form dough into a ball. Wrap in waxed paper or plastic film. Refrigerate 2 hours. (Dough may be stored several days.)
To bake cookies: Preheat oven to 350º F. Lightly grease cookie sheets. Divide dough into fourths. On lightly floured board, roll out dough, cut with cookie cutters.
