Directions:Make the Dipping Sauce by combining in a medium bowl, the first 8 Ingredients. Mix these together very well and then cover and place into the refrigerator until needed.
Now, in a medium bowl, beat the EGG and MILK together, then set aside. In a separate bowl, combine the FLOUR, SALT, CAYENNE PEPPER, PAPRIKA, Ground BLACK PEPPER, Dried OREGANO, Dried THYME and CUMIN and mix all together very well, then set aside.
Slice off about 3/4 of an inch of the top and bottom of the ONION, and then remove the papery skin. Use a thin knife to cut a 1 inch diameter core out of the middle of the ONION. - Now use a very sharp, large knife to slice the ONION several times down the center to create 'petals': First slice through the center of the ONION to about three-fourths of the way down. Turn the ONION 90 degrees and slice it again in an X across the first slice. Keep slicing the sections in half, very carefully until the ONION is cut into 16ths.
Spread the 'petals' of the ONION apart. To help keep them separate you could plunge the ONION into boiling water for 1 minute and then into cold water. Some also suggest that you place the cut ONION in cold water in the refrigerator for a couple of hours prior to being ready to cook.
Dip the ONION into the MILK mixture and then coat it liberally with the FLOUR mixture. Separate the petals and sprinkle the FLOUR between them. Once you're sure it is well-coated, dip it back into the MILK and into the FLOUR again. Then set aside for about 15 minutes. This double-dipping ensures a well-coated ONION.
Heat the OIL in a deep fryer or deep pot to 350°F. Make sure you use enough OIL to completely cover the ONION when it fries. Carefully insert the ONION into the OIL and fry right side up for 10 minutes, or until browned. When browned, remove it and let it drain on a rack or paper towels. |

Notes: Anyone who has ever eaten at an Outback Restaurant know what a "Bloomin Onion" is. Most everyone loves them. Well, this is how Mom says to make them at home. - Sometimes if you know ahead, you can slice your onion and place it in cold water in the refrigerator for a few hours before ready to batter.
