½ cup Crisco
1½ cup sugar
2 eggs
1 tbsp. vanilla
2 tbsp. cocoa
2 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
1 cup buttermilk
1 tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. soda
2 ounces red food coloring

FROSTING
1 cup milk
¼ cup flour
Pinch of salt

1 cup sugar
½ cup Crisco
1 stick oleo

CAKE: Cream together Crisco and sugar. Add eggs one at a time and beat until light and fluffy. Make a paste of the coca and food coloring. Add to creamed mixture. Combine buttermilk, salt and vanilla in a small bowl.
In large bowl sift together flour and salt. Add buttermilk mixture alternating with the creamed mixture.
In small bowl combine soda and vinegar; gently fold into creamed mixture but do not beat.
Pour batter into two greased and floured 9-inch round pans. Bake at 350°for 30 minutes or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.

FROSTING: Cook milk, flour, and salt in a saucepan until thick; cool thoroughly. Beat sugar, Crisco, and butter at high speed until fluffy in medium bowl. Add flour mixture and 1 tsp. vanilla to the creamed sugar mixture. Beat together at high speed until fluffy. Frost cooled cakes.

I remember making this cake with Mom one time. I was so shocked when I realized how much red food coloring went into. Mom says the food coloring makes the cake moist. Something does; it’s awesome.
