1 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. buttermilk or sour milk
2 eggs (unbeaten)
1 tsp. vanilla
2 squares unsweetened chocolate (melted)
prepared vanilla pudding

Directions:
Directions:
Sift flour once measuring into sifter with soda and salt. Have shortening at room temperature. Mix to soften, add dry ingredients. Add brown sugar (with no lumps). Add 1/2 of eggs, milk and vanilla. Mix until flour is all dampened then beat for a minute (l00 strokes). Add remaining milk, eggs and the chocolate. Beat two minutes (200 strokes). Scrape bowl with spoon often while beating. Bake in layers. Put together with pudding and sprinkle confectionary sugar on top.
