1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs
1/3 c. cocoa or 2 squares of melted chocolate
2 c. sifted cake flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. sour milk or (1 c. milk to 4 tbsp. vinegar)

Cream shortening. Add sugar and cream until fluffy. Add vanilla, beaten egg yolks, and cocoa. Sift the dry ingredients 3 times. Add alternately with milk. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Pour into 2 greased 9" pans. Bake at 350º for 25 minutes.
