1 1/2 c. flour
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp slat
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp allspice
2/3 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
2 eggs, slightly beaten
2 c. nuts, chopped
2 c raisins
2 c dates, chopped
2 tbsp. Sherry or Brandy

Sift flour, measure; add soda, baking powder, salt and spices; sift again.

Cream shortening; gradually add sugar and continue to beat until light; add slightly beaten eggs and mix well. Add nuts, raisins, and dates.

Add dry ingredients alternately with wine. Chill.

Drop by the teaspoonful's 2 or 3 inches apart onto a greased baking sheet. Bake at 375 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes.

Makes 4 to 5 dozen.
