5 lbs lard
1 can lye
1 tsp sugar
1/4 cup ammonia
3 tbsp powdered borax

Directions:
Directions:
Put lye in 1 quart cold water in an enamel container. After lye has been put in cold water, stir well with a stick or wooden spoon. Dissolve sugar ammonia and borax powder in 1/2 cup water. Add to lye after it has quit foaming. After mixture has cooled down some, add lard very slowly and stir slowly. Pour into wax paper lined box. Let stand 4-6 hours. Cut into bars.

Mom used to make her own soap for doing laundry many years ago. She would shave these bars with a grater. -Bev
