Personal Notes:
Growing up, we did not have snacks between meals. If we were hungry, my great grandmother Mary Alice Carlisle would make us a Syrup Suzie. She lived in our home with us until I was a teenager. She took me to the Holiness Church on Sunday. We would walk two miles to the church if my mom was working late and we didn't have a car. We went on Wednesday nights and Sundays. She carried a parasol and wore long sleeves in the summer to keep the sun off, and she walked everywhere. At the church the girls wore oxford shoes and long dresses and couldn't wear makeup. I wasn't too interested in joining that church. She had one pattern she made her dresses from, using different fabrics and laces to distinguish the 'everyday' from the 'fancy' dresses. She wore petticoats and chemise and cotton stockings. When my mother was dying of cancer at age 47, the Holiness Church folk came to visit her. They laid hands on her and prayed loudly in tongues over her. My son Johnny was a toddler then, and was alarmed by the racket. He ran in the room and hollered, "Stop, leave my grandmother alone".
