1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 egg yolks
2 squares of baking chocolate
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp, salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup sour milk

Directions:
Directions:
Beat egg, shortening and sugar together, add melted chocolate. Sift dry ingredients,add alternately with sour milk, beating well. Bake at 350º for 20-30 minutes.

This is best with a frosting made from 2 squares melted baking chocolate, 1/4 stick butter, 1 1/2 tsp vanilla, confectioner's sugar (add until it is the right consistency.)

Knowing my mother, I suspect she used 2 whole eggs instead of just the yolks. She was a very frugal and practical woman.

When she did not have sour milk, she added a little vinegar to regular milk.
