1/2 cup warm water + 1/4 tsp sugar to start working

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup water. Combine sugar, shortening, salt, powdered milk and warm water in large bowl. Cool to lukewarm and softened yeast. Add about half of flour and beat well. This is very important. Let batter rest for 10-15 minutes, then add remainder of flour, working it in well until dough is not sticky. Knead lightly on floured surface until easy to handle. Sometimes it helps to grease your hands. Place in greased bowl, cover, and let rise in warm place until double in bulk, about 1 hr. Punch down and knead lightly to reduce to original size. COver and let rise to double again. Take out on greased board and divide into loaves according to size of pans. Shape into loaves and place in greased pans. Cover with sheet of plastic and let rise to double. Bake 35-40 minutes at 375º oven.
