Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 Cans lye
2 Quarts of soft water
5 Quarts lard*
2 Tbsp borax
Oil of Sassafras

Directions:
Directions:
Dissolve 2 cans of lye in 2 quarts of soft water in a granite pan. Let this stand until cold. Then warm 5 quarts of lard* (just enough so it will stir up like honey.) Pour slowly into the lye water, stirring very slow. Add 2 Tbsp borax and stir slowly for 10 minutes.

Just before pouring mixture out, put in a little oil of sassafras. Pour into a box or granite pan to harden. As soon as it begins to set, score it in squares. It will then be easier to cut when hard.

You can make 1/2 of this at a time, but it is not wise to make a bigger batch at one time. The sassafras is just to take away the smell of lye and grease. You can use oil of citronella also, but the sassafras is cheaper.

*When fryings or old lard is used, boil it up in water the day before. Let stand overnight. The salt, etc will settle in the water. In the morning take the lard out and melt and strain and let it sit and cool while the lye water is cooling.
