Notes: “When I married Dan, in 1957, Christmas Eve was always celebrated at Uncle Tom and Aunt Freda Cronin’s house. From six in the evening until six in the morning relatives and friends came to eat, drink and play cards. The South-end was a small neighborhood where everyone was related. They worked together, went to church together or school together. It was a parade of open houses every Christmas Eve and tradition to lay evergreens and flowers on the graves at St Joseph’s cemetery, creating a never-ending line of cars circling the narrow paths of the cemetery in the dreary and foggy evening nights of winter. It was like the penance before the fun. As soon as everyone ate, the table was cleared and the Tom and Jerry’s began. At 11:30 pm, most left for Mid-night Mass. Tom and his old crony’s would stay at the house and play pinochle through the wee hours of the morning. All those with good sense and small children left to celebrate again the following day. That continued until Uncle Tom’s death in the Spring of ‘67. Grandma Mary was able to continue the immediate family’s celebration, alternating between Johns’s, Jimmy’s and Dan’s home. Early in the 70’s Grandma Mary had her first stroke. She had been the main caretaker for Sheilah and Lori and that left John’s life in complete chaos. Dan wanted to escape for the holiday, so we all packed up and drove south until the road came to an end and we discovered Naples. I have always blamed Dan for the Naples explosion. When we returned, we found no body had ever heard of Naples. It wasn’t long after that Laura came into John’s life and they began spending their Christmas in Naples also. It’s sad to think that what was such a wonderful and close family became so distant that two cousins lived a block apart and didn’t even know it. Jimmy continued to offer his Tom and Jerry Christmas Toast, whenever and wherever he could. I remember coming back to Ohio for the holiday, and decided to attend Mid-night Mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. It was announced from the Pulpit that following the Mass Jean and Jimmy would be serving Tom and Jerry’s in the Rectory. It is in that spirit that Tim, M.J., Fitz, and K.C. have decided to have a Tom and Jerry night to celebrate both Christmas and a family evening of fun.” Carole
