Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups chopped dates
1 tsp. baking soda
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1/2 cup Crisco
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 2/3 cup sifted flour
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
1. Add dates and baking soda to boiling water. Allow to cool.

2. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs.

3. Add cooled date mixture alternately with the dry ingredients. Makes a fairly thin batter.

4. Pour into a greased and floured 9x13 cake pan. Sprinkle one 12 ounce package of chocolate chips over the top of the batter. Then sprinkle top of cake with 1/2 cup granulated sugar.

5. Bake for approximately 50 minutes in a 350* oven. This cake is a very moist and rich cake that needs no frosting. My family loves this cake (we often put cool whip on top!). My daughter Kaila picks this cake for her birthday cake almost every year.
