1/4 cup all purpose flour
1 cup milk
1 stick butter
1/2 cup shortening (or use all butter, but icing will be softer)
2 cups sugar
2 tsp. vanilla
Directions:
Directions:
Mix flour and milk together in small saucepan. Cook and stir until mixture comes to a boil, then reduce heat and cook 2 more minutes, stirring constantly. Set mixture aside to cool completely. Mix butter, shortening and sugar together in large mixing bowl. Cream until very fluffy, about 8-10 minutes. Beat in cooled custard mixture and vanilla. Whip for a few more minutes until fluffy. Spread on cooled cake.

This is actually better if you make it early, then let it set for a few hours so that the sugar crystals have dissolved really well. Then beat it a little more and frost the cake. Excellent on Red Velvet, chocolate, spice or banana cakes.This recipe is in memory of Polly Davis.
