1 can high test lye
1/2 gal. cold water

25 lbs. cracklings
5 cans lye
10 gal. water

Directions:
Directions:
In a 5-gal. stone jar, put the cracklings (just as they come from butchering day), the lye and water. Stir every day for four or five days. Then empty contents of the jar into large metal dishpan or boiler and cook until the consistency of honey or till it "threads" through a fork. Pour into a soap mold or let stand in dishpan until cool; then mark bars.
Large kettle method: put ingredients in large black pot and cook outside, over an open fire.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Cracklings are the crisp remains of fat which has been cooked to release all of the fat (saved as "lard" for frying and baking).
