1 1/2 c. boiling water
1 c. rolled oats, quick or old-fashioned
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. white sugar
1 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. chopped nuts
Topping:
1 stick margarine or butter
1 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. evaporated milk
1/2 c. chopped nuts (optional)
1/2 c. flaked coconut (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Pour the boiling water over the oats; set aside. Meanwhile, cream the shortening with the two sugars, then beat in the 2 eggs. Stir in the oat mixture. Now sift the flour and other dry ingredients together and add this to the batter, then stir in vanilla and nuts. Spread in a buttered and floured 9x9x2-inch baking pan and bake 35 minutes at 350°.
Topping: Melt the butter or margarine, blend in other ingredients. Spread on the hot cake. Brown under the broiler, but watch it while browning. This is a delicious topping for any cake.
