Dough:
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg (well beaten)
2 cups sifted flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/3 tsp salt
Wax paper

Filling:
1/2 lb pitted dates, cut up
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup ground almonds
1/3 cup or more water (orange juice optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Beat butter or margarine until creamy. Add sugar gradually and beat until fluffy. Beat in egg. Sift together flour, soda, and salt. Stir into margarine mixture. Chill at least 30 minutes.

Combine dates, sugar, water (orange juice) and salt in small pan. Cook 5 minutes over low heat, stirring frequently. Cool and add other ingredients. Roll dough into rectangle. Spread with date mixture. Roll up like jelly roll. Wrap in wax paper and chill overnight. Bake at 350º for 10-12 minutes
