1/2 (14") loaf Italian bread
1/3 stick butter
1/4 tsp. basil
1/4 tsp. salt
2 T. salad oil
2 small onions, sliced thinly
1- 28 oz. can tomatoes
1 1/2 tsp. sugar

Cut bread in 1/2" cubes. In skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add bread cubes, basil and salt; stir until bread is golden. Remove cubes to plate. Wipe skillet clean. Add oil to skillet and cook onions until tender and golden, stir in tomatoes in their liquid. Add the sugar and salt; heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 5 minutes. In a 2-qt. casserole, spoon 1/2 of the tomato mixture, then 1/2 bread cubes; repeat. Bake in a preheated 400º oven 15 minutes or until mixture is hot.
