3 pints cold vinegar
2 pints cold water
1/2 c. salt
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. ground mustard
10 1-grain saccharin tablets
4 quarts small, fresh pickling cucumbers

Directions:
Directions:
Mix together the first 6 ingredients, stirring over low heat on the stove until the sugar and the saccharin tablets dissolve. Pack the cucumbers in a crock, and then pour the mixture over them. Store in the fridge or cool place, and stir every day for one week. They should last, refrigerated, for several weeks after that.

Grama started using this low-sugar recipe when Bompa was learning to live with diabetes, but they were so tasty that we kept making them even after he had died. His diabetes, diagnosed during the stock market crash, changed his life significantly, but Grama helped him every step of the way and he lived a remarkably good, long life.
