1 lb. sweet Italian sausage
1 lb. lean ground beef
1 cup finely chopped onion
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes
2 (6 oz.) cans tomato sauce
1/2 cup water
1 Tbsp white sugar
1 1/2 tsp. dried basil leaves
1/4 tsp. fennel seeds
1 tsp. Italian seasoning
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
2 Tbsp.chopped fresh parsley

9 lasagna noodles
16 oz. ricotta cheese
1 egg
2 Tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
1/2 tsp. salt
1 lb. mozzarella cheese slices
3/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Directions:
Directions:
1) Cook sausage, beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until well browned.
2) Add rest of sauce ingredients and simmer on low heat for 1- 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
3) Bring large pot of lightly salted water to boil. Cook lasagna noodles in boiling water for 8-10 minutes. Drain noodles and rinse with cold water.
4) In mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, 2 Tbsp. parsley, and salt.
5) To assemble, spread 1 1/2 cups of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 dish. Arrange 3 noodles lengthwise over sauce. Spread with half of the ricotta cheese mixture. Top with a third of mozzarella cheese slices. Spoon 1 1/2 cups meat sauce over mozzarella and sprinkle with 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese.
6) Repeat layers, and top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.
7) Cover with foil and bake at 350º for 1 3/4 hours, uncover and bake for additional 15 minutes.

A few suggestions:
Make the sauce the day before and simmer for 6 hours. Put the sauce in the refrigerator overnight, making sure to let sauce sit at room temp before assembling the dish.
