Directions:Use a large pan that will hold a lot of drippings. Place the turkey in the pan (Its better if you have a rack to keep turkey off bottom of pan) and leave unstuffed. Slice by slice cover entire turkey with the bacon. Mix ½ cup of maple syrup with ½ cup of water and pour over turkey. I will drizzle a little syrup over turkey at this point. Salt and pepper turkey. Cover and seal turkey with aluminum foil. Cook the turkey as directed on the package. Every hour or hour and a half depending on the size of the turkey open the tin foil and pour another ¼ cup syrup and ¼ cup water over turkey. I usually only do this twice. This is the most important part! Use a good meet thermometer and cook the turkey to 165 degrees. Gravy (The best part) This is an easy way to make awesome gravy with this turkey. The ratio is 1 cup of liquid to 2 T. of flour. I will use at least 1 ½ cups of dripping juice, there is a lot because of the syrup/water basting. I start by measuring all the flour I am planning to use and then use the drippings to stir the flour. Stir together on medium/high heat until flour has broken down. I then use chicken broth for the rest of the liquid. Stir until the gravy thickens. |
