3/4 cup shortening
1 cup brown sugar(may use white)
14 cup molasses
1 egg
2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves

Directions:
Directions:
Cream together shortening, sugar, molasses and egg until light and fluffy. Measure dry ingredients together and mix. Stir into creamed mixture. Shape into 1 inch balls. Roll in sugar and place on greased cookie sheet. Bake 8-10 minutes at 375ºF

May press down with fork if you wish.

I used half and half applesauce and lard instead of shortening. The cookies were softer and not so crisp.
