½ c. shortening
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 ½ c. sugar
¼ tsp. salt
2 eggs
2 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda dissolved in 2 Tbsp. hot water
1 c. chopped nuts
5 c. finely chopped apples
½ tsp. nutmeg
More nuts and sugar for top

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar together. Beat in eggs. Stir in dissolved soda. Sift dry ingredients together and fold into creamed mixture. Stir in nuts and apples. (Batter will be very thick.)

Pour into greased 9” x 13” pan. Sprinkle batter with additional nuts and sugar.

Bake at 350° for 45 to 60 minutes.

While cake is still warm, drizzle with thin confectioner’s sugar frosting is desired.

Delicious served with Cool Whip or ice cream.
