2 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/3 cup shortening
2 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. salt
1 cup cocoa
6 eggs
1/4 tsp almond extract
4 cups flour
2 1/4 tsp baking soda
2 1/4 tsp baking powder
1 pint water (2 cups)
1 cup sauerkraut (wash, drained and cut in small pieces)

Directions:

Cream sugar and shortening on 3rd speed for ten minutes. Add eggs, vanilla, salt and cocoa; continue beating for 5 minutes on first speed until light. Sift flour, baking soda, baking powder together (5 times); add alternately with water to creamed mixture. Add sauerkraut and mix this thoroughly. Bake in greased and floured deep sheet pan 11x17x2" or two 13x9x2" pans. 350ºF for 45 minutes. Cool and frost with boiled frosting; sprinkle coconut on top.
