3 cups milk
3/4 cups sugar
6 tbsp cornstarch
1/2 tsp salt
3 eggs, beaten
1 tbsp butter
2 tsp vanilla
3 oz (3 squares) unsweetened chocolate (omit for vanilla)

Directions:
Directions:
Scald milk in double boiler. If making chocolate, melt chocolate squares in milk.
Mix together sugar, cornstarch,salt. Stir into milk. Add vanilla. Cook stirring constantly until thick. Cover and cook 10 minutes longer.
Add small amount of milk mixture to eggs to temper eggs so they don't scramble. Then stir egg mixture into milk mixture In double boiler. Cook 5 minutes more. Add butter and stir in. Pour into bowl and sprinkle top with sugar to prevent skin from forming.
