For Cookies
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening (Crisco)
2 eggs
pinch of salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp soda
4-5 cups flour (enough to make a soft dough)

Frosting
1/4 - 1/3 cup of butter or margarine
Powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
Can add milk or boiling water to thin to proper consistency

Directions:

Mix together soda and sour cream.
Cream sugar and shortening.
Add eggs.
Add salt and vanilla.
Add in sour cream and soda mixture.
Add flour a cup at a time until it is soft dough.
Roll out on a floured surface. Cut into shapes.
Bake at 350-370º until just set (do not brown).

Frosting:
Put butter in bowl, pour in some boiling water.
add powdered sugar until right consistency to spread on cookies. Add vanilla and food coloring if desired.

Alternate: If no frosting is desired, add chopped black walnuts to dough and sprinkle with white sugar before baking.
