1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 cup molasses
2 large eggs
4 tsp. soda
3/4 cup hot water
1 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 Tbsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
51/2-6 cups flour

Directions:
Directions:
Mix shortening, sugar, molasses and eggs well with electric mixer. Mix soda and hot water together. Add to first mixture. Mix dry ingredients. Add to first mixture. Let stand over night before rolling and cutting. Don't roll too thin. Cookie has somewhat consistency of gingerbread. Bake 8 minutes a 350 degrees. Touch top of cookie. Finger print should quickly disappear if cookie is sufficiently baked.

20 minutes to mix. Baking time can be divided up if dough is refrigerated between sessions.

This recipe of Anne Daugherty's was a favorite of mine growing up. It was a favorite of our two children and now of our five grandchildren. I make it in many holiday shapes, found nautical cutters for a shore vacation, Statue of Liberty cutter for our visit to New York - 2010.
