CAKE:

1 1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. Crisco
1/2 t. salt
2 eggs
1 c. buttermilk and 1 t. vanilla
2 c. flour and 1 T. cocoa
2 oz. bottle red food coloring
1 t. vinegar and 1 t. soda
FROSTING:

1 c. milk
3 T. flour
1 c. sugar
1 c. butter
3 T. powdered sugar

Cream sugar, Crisco© and salt. Add eggs. Alternate buttermilk/vanilla and flour/cocoa. Mix well. Add food coloring. Lastly, add vinegar/soda mixture. Pour into 2 - 8" greased and floured cake pans. Bake at 350º for 30 minutes. Cool cake and cut each in half to make thin slices.
For Frosting, scald milk and all at once drop in flour. Beat until thick, beating all the time. Cool. In mixer, beat sugar and butter until fluffy. Add powdered sugar and add flour/milk mixture. Beat well. Spread between layers and on top.

The frosting is temperamental...it's consistency depends on the weather. This was a staple at every birthday!
