3/4 cup shortening
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
4 tablespoon molasses
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
2 teaspoon baking soda
scant cup flour
pinch of salt

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream shortening, sugar and egg. Stir in molasses. Add dry ingredients. Mix well. Cover and refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes or more. Roll into walnut sized balls; place on a cookie sheet and smash with a sugared glass. Bake for 12 minutes.
