8 quarts green tomatoes, chopped fine
4 lbs. brown sugar
water
2 pounds raisins
1 scant cup vinegar
juice of one lemon
1 cup suet or shortening
2 tbsp. cinnamon
2 tbsp. cloves
2 tbsp. nutmeg

Directions:
Directions:
Drain off the liquid from the chopped tomatoes, measure it, and add the same amount of fresh water to a pot with the chopped tomatoes. Scald this mixture and drain off again. Then add the same amount of fresh water again with the rest of the ingredients. Cook very slowly on the back of the stove for 1 1/2 hours. Makes enough filling for 15 pies.
