Pour 1 c boiling water over 1 cup cut dates.
Add 1 tsp soda.
Let stand while the following is mixed in the usual way:
1/2 c sugar
1/4 c butter
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 & 1/2 c sifted flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c chopped nuts
Add these ingredients to the above mixture and pour into a 9x12 greased pan.

Bake 35 minutes in moderate oven, 375º.

Prepare Icing:
5 T brown sugar
5 T cream
2 T butter
Boil 3 minutes.
Spread on while cake is warm.
Sprinkle with coconut and chopped nuts.
This is suppossed to be the only cake the Queen makes herself. She goes into her own kitchen and stirs it up.
Her request is that the recipe is not to be passed on, but rather sold for charitable purposes.
