1/3 cup sugar
1 egg
1 1/2 Tblsp. shortening
1/2 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1 3/4 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
Sprinkle of nutmeg
1/2 cup sour milk or buttermilk

Directions:
Directions:
Beat egg until fluffy. Add sugar, shortening, and vanilla. Mix thoroughly. Add sour milk and mix. Add dry ingredients which have been sifted together. Add more flour if necessary, but keep dough soft as possible. Toll out 1/2 inch thick. cut with doughnut cutter. Fry in hot fat until brown on both sides. turn when first cracks appear. Drain on absorbent paper and roll in sugar.
