Directions:
Dissolve yeast in warm water (110 degrees). In saucepan, combine milk, shortening, salt and sugar. Heat to scalding. Cool to 110 degrees and add dissolved yeast. Beat in 3 cups of flour and 1 c. of whole wheat flour. With a spoon, add more flour (about ½ c.) until stiff sticky dough forms. Turn dough on to floured board and kneed, adding more flour as needed until dough is smooth and not sticky.

Place dough in greased bowl, turn over to grease top. Cover and let stand at room temperature for 1 hour. Punch dough down. Can then be chilled overnight. Knead dough on lightly floured board. Roll dough out a portion at a time to 1/8 inch thick. Cue into pieces and deep-fry 2-3 at a time. When bread puffs, turn over and cook till just golden brown. Drain on paper towels.
