1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter
1/4 cup light corn syrup
2 tsp. vanilla
3/4 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. soda
1 large egg
2 1/4 cups flour
2 cups semi-sweet real chocolate chips
1 cup pecans or walnuts - chopped
Optional: can add dried cranberries

Topping:
3 oz. baking chocolate squares
One 14 oz. can Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 cup of pecans or walnuts - chopped

Preheat oven to 350º. Combine butter, corn syrup, vanilla, baking powder, salt, and soda. Beat until smooth. Add the egg and continue beating. Add flour and continue blending. Add chocolate chips, nuts, and cranberries, if desired.
Lightly grease a 13" x 18" (half sheet) pan. Spoon batter into pan.
Wet fingers to pat it smooth and spread to the corners. there is enough dough for this pan. Don't bake yet.

Heat the baking chocolate squares with the milk either on low heat or in the microwave until melted. Add vanilla and mix well. Pour this mixture over the dough, spreading with a spatula to cover. Sprinkle with chopped nuts.

Bake for 20-22 minutes until cooked in the center. Cool completely and then cut bars. Freezes well. Each bar as 147 calories.
