2 pkgs ham hocks or ham shanks
chopped half round onion
4 cloves garlic
1 pkg dried split pea
1 can chicken broth
5 large bay leaves
salt to taste

Directions:
Directions:
In a deep bowl place dry peas in hot water. Let soak for at least a half hour adding hot water each time water disappears. Place ham hocks, after washing thoroughly, onions, garlic, 2 cups water, chicken broth in a crock pot. Let cook on high for at least a half hour. Add peas, bay leaves and more chicken broth if needed. Broth should be almost over the ham hocks. Cook for 4-5 hours on high, then turn down to medium for another half hour or until peas have dissolved into a soup; be sure to stir and break up ham hocks. Salt to taste. Remove bayleaves before serving. Serve with sour dough bread or french bread.
