1/2 c. shortening,
2 c. sugar,
1 egg,
1 1/2 c. unsweetened apple sauce,
2 1/2 c. flour,
1/2 tsp. salt,
1/2 tsp. cinnamon,
1/2 tsp. cloves,
1/2 tsp. allspice,
1/2 tsp. mace,
1 c. chopped dates or raisins,
1/2 c. chopped pecans or walnuts,
2 tsp. baking soda,
1/2 c. boiling water.

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar gradually. Add well beaten egg. Add cooled applesauce. Sift flour once before measuring. Use a little of the flour to dredge fruit and nuts. Shift remaining flour with salt and spices. Dissolve soda in boiling water. Add flour mixture alternately with the water to the creamed mixture. Add floured fruit and nuts. Bake 35 min at 350 degrees in a 9x13 pan. Top with Broiled Frosting.

Broiled Frosting:
1 c. brown sugar,
5 tbl. butter,
5 tbl. canned milk,
3/4 c. coconut,
3/4 c. chopped pecans or walnuts,
Mix together and spread over cooled cake. Place in oven and broil until golden brown. Watch very closely.
