1 c. chopped dates
1 tsp. soda
1 1/2 c. boiling water
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 tsp. soda



TOPPING:
1 c. chocolate chips
1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Mix dates, 1 tsp. soda, and water together and let cool. Cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs. Add cooled date mixture (batter will be curdled). Then add flour, soda and salt. Spread in 9 x 13 pan. Sprinkled with chips, brown sugar and nuts. Bake ay 350º for 40 minutes.

This is an old recipe of my grandmother's. I liked it so much as a kid, that I asked for it as my birthday cake.
