1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/2 c. buttermilk
1 12 c flour
4 T cocoa
1 tsp soda
1/2 C. boiling water
1 tsp vanilla
Directions:
Directions:
Sift together flour and cocoa; set aside. Cream shortening, vanilla, and sugar until fluffy. Beat in egg, add flour and cocoa alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour and cocoa. Mix soda with boiling water, quickly beat into batter. Bake 20-25 minutes at 350º.

Frosting: 3 c. powdered sugar, 6 T butter, 1/2 c. cocoa, 1/4 c. milk or cream, pinch of salt, 1 1/2 tsp vanilla. Blend until smooth.
