Directions:
Combine pudding mix, egg yolks and milk in saucepan. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture comes to a full boil. Remove from heat. Arrange a layer of vanilla wafers on bottom and sides of 1 1/2 qt. baking dish. Slice banana over top of wafers until wafers are covered. Spoon a layer of pudding over bananas. Continue layering wafers, bananas, and pudding, ending with pudding.
Beat egg whites with salt and cream of tartar until foamy. Gradually beat in sugar and vanilla until mixture will form stiff shiny peaks. Spoon lightly over pudding, sealing edges. For a pretty top, swirl top of meringue with a spoon. Bake at 425º oven for 5 to 10 minutes, or until meringue is lightly browned.
Serve warm.

Personal Notes:
This is how mama made her banana pudding. I made this a few times for our family reunion. Joe likes this pudding cold, but I think it tastes best when it still warm from the oven.
