Sugar Cookies and Buttercream Frosting Recipe

Ingredients: Cookie
1 c shortening (Crisco) 2 c sugar 2 eggs 2 tsp vanilla 1 c sour cream 5 c flour 3 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda
Frosting
⅓ c butter (softened) 1 tsp vanilla 1 tsp salt (omit if using salted butter) ¼ c milk 4½ c powdered sugar

1. Cream together shortening and sugar. 2. Slowly add the eggs, vanilla and then sour cream. 3. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder and baking soda. 4. Gradually add the flour mixture into the other ingredients. Do not overmix. 5. Chill at least 2 hours. 6. Roll dough ¼" thick and cut into desired shapes. Bake on parchment paper or a silicone mat for 9 minutes at 350º. Cool completely.
Frosting
1. Mix together butter, vanilla and salt. 2. Alternate adding milk and powdered sugar. If more milk is needed to reach the desired consistency, add 1 tsp at a time. Add coloring if desired at this time. 3. Spread frosting on cookie with knife or pipe frosting on the cookie. Add sprinkles as desired. |

Notes: This recipe is from Jessica's friend Emily Kennedy's grandmother. It is our sugar cookie recipe of choice for Christmas. I typically fix only half a batch and it is plenty since we have other sweet treats for the holidays.
We served these at Jessica and Spencer's wedding. They were in the shape of rectangles with piped frosting and shimmery dust! Everyone loved them!
